Doom 3 - First Impressions

Ok, I know i'm way behind here... but I only got a decent laptop recently so be quiet!

Doom 3 is a loose retelling of the original Doom. It starts with the basic half life style opening. You get to wander around the base, talk to people, read emails on your PDA... Then you're given your first mission. To go find a missing scientist. As you get deeper into the base you begin to hear things... rumours from the workers about strange events. A mysterious warning. You finally find the scientist and... well, lets just say it ends with him trying to nibble your ear.

I want to point out that i'm not easily scared. However, I have to admit that this game has made me jump a fair few times, and i'm only a few hours in. The realistic graphics (which are only set to medium quality on my laptop) and the great sound effects create an eerie, tension building atmosphere... so much so that its almost a relief when a demon bursts through the wall and starts chucking fireballs like nobodys business.

In terms of gameplay though, i'm not too impressed. Its seems to be a basic fps. Nothing special. Doesn't do anything wrong... it's just... well. normal i suppose. Not always a bad thing, but I'm a big fan of the Doom series and expected a bit more. The atmosphere goes some way to make up for that but still...

Review later when I get a bit further.
