Guitar Hero IV will feature other instruments and vocals

If what Activision's Bobby Kotick has stated in the latest issue of Conde Nast Portfolio magazine is true, then "Guitar Hero" could soon become a misnomer for the series. Guitar Hero IV could be branching out to "include a lot of other instruments, [and] vocals". Not a bad idea, except it's been done before.

Judging from Guitar Hero III's low quality controller build and its lackluster downloadable content, we don't really expect Guitar Hero IV to be much of a Rock Band beater. Especially when you consider Harmonix' superior ability to create note charts. Who knows though, maybe Neversoft will feature an instrument not currently available in Rock Band - that's the only real way we can see the franchise becoming relevant again.

Guitar Hero is a lot of fun, but once you've played Rock Band it's hard to go back. I think they lost a lot of good will with a shoddy wireless guitar in GH3, and even if they introduce new instruments in GH4, they've lost a lot of their fans to Rock Band. And Rock Band is coming out with more and more downloadable music, which keeps it fun and new.

We've had two of the GH3 guitars so far which both stopped working for no reason. Eventually, we bought Rocks the 80s just to get one of the older, better quality guitars. As for rock band... well they've not been nice to us europeans so far with constant delays and an insane price, but if its as half as good as people say it is, I'm sure I'll love it. This just sounds like Rock band envy for GH4.

I have Guitar Hero II, which has the wired controller and it's worked pretty reliably. My only complaint is that the position control thing that activates "star power" (tilting the guitar neck upward) has stopped working reliably. You can press the Start button to activate it, but that's near impossible while playing a song because of the small size and position of the button.

The guitar that came with Rock Band has a nice big Start button -- and it's also a wired controller.
