Funcom loves freeloaders
Funcom’s Anarchy Online has been doing very well since they announced free gameplay for the duration of 2005. In case you hadn’t heard, you can now download the full massively multiplayer online game and play through the whole year without paying a dime. Now comes word that Funcom is so blown away by the response that they’re extending the offer into 2006.
Predictably, they’re seeing more users now than ever before - even during their launch month. It will be interesting to see if this experiment lasts. Notice the fine print, and you’ll see they make it very clear that the rug could be pulled out from under the deal, at the company’s discretion. It’s not likely, but it’s possible. I tried the game out when it first launched, but found it a bit obtuse. With this latest announcement, I’m heading over to Funcom to consume some serious bandwidth.
