I've recently heard of some spin off games from the PSone RPG, Final Fantasy 7. I thought I'd post the news here.

Advent Children
I think most of you will have heard of this one. It's an animated film that takes place after Final Fantasy 7 (2 years afterwards). The animation on the trailer is extremely impressive but I have no idea about the story line. Sephiroth is back as the villian and that's all I know.
[edit] Having got more info, it seems that Sephiroth is not the Main Villian. The shots of him walking through the fire are probably a flashback to FF7.

Even though the film is not yet finished, Square received a special invitation to show the film at the Venice Film Festival. It was also recently shown at the Montreal Film Festival. The film is also supposed to be available for the PSP when it is finally released. The trailer can be viewed Here (http://media.psp.ign.com/media/608/608155/vid_694204.html?mu=http%3A%2F%2Fstreamingmovies.ig n.com%2Fps2%2Fffv7advent_021904_01_wmvlow.wmv)
{Edit}
Two more trailers can be viewed on the Official site. (http://www.square-enix.co.jp/dvd/ff7ac/)Enter the site and got to Trailers. Trailer 2 is in English.

Before Crisis.
This is a Mobile Phone game, which takes place before Final Fantasy 7 and seems to be about the Turks, possibly about their rise to power. Not much is known about this game yet although Square Enix have released two screenshots.

Not bad for a mobile game. Information can be found Here (http://www.ffshrine.org/before-crisis/before-crisis.php)

Dirge of Cerberus
This is a PS2 RPG which takes place one year after the events of Advent Children. The main character is Vincent Valentine, one of the two optional characters from FF7.
Information about this game is found Here ("http://www.the-magicbox.com/0409/game091504a.shtml)

These Spin offs are being made to "Complete the FFVII Story and explore the entire FFVII world".

Very interesting. I wonder if they will do this with another FF game.

another rumour is that, FF7 will be re-released on PS2, but no-one is sure if the game will be improved graphically.

I bet you that S-E is just using all the fame and stuff that FFVII has got to boost their games. The movie looks good, and even the new PS2 game, but I mean, couldn't they have just done the same thing with different (meaning new) characters or something?

It's not like the FF series hasn't already got enough supporters that if they made a new game, people wouldn't buy it.

They tried that with FF: The spirits within and that didnt do well outside Japan. Thats why they'll use the FF7 popularity for the film and games.

Yeah, It didn't help that "The Spirits Within" had absolutely nothing to do with FF. None of the elements that are carried on to new FF's (Such as Chocobos, moogles, summons etc) were present in the film. The only relation TSW had to FF was that it was made by Square. Advent Children is looking a lot better and is a "true" Final Fantasy film.

Lets just hope these spin offs don't destroy the original game. The mobile game is probably the most likely to fail, as playing Pac-man on my phone is difficult, never mind FF7. Hopefully it'll be playable. Having a version of FF7 in my pocket would definetly help me when i'm bored. :o

I've found another website with information about these spin offs. It is found here (http://ff7ac.net/). It contains trailers for Before Crisis and Dirge of Cereberus as well as Advent Children.
*Warning*
Some articles, like the translation of the video, contain AC spoilers. Don't read if you don't want to know. ;)

Square Enix to Bring Mobile Titles to North America
10.28.2004

PHILLIP CLAYTON
ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

UIEvolution, a technology company recently acquired by Square Enix, has shed some new light on Square Enix's plans to release mobile titles in North America. Chris Ruff, vice president of marketing and product management at UIEvolution, revealed that Square Enix had acquired his software platform company earlier in the year to facilitate its move towards "polymorphic content," a term coined by Square Enix to describe the process by which game content is transferred between a variety of media and terminals, including mobile phones and movies.

Ruff went on to say that UIEvolution's scripting tools are capable of running on the PC, PlayStation 2, and mobile phones, and can ease technical issues that arise between these platforms. When asked about the probability of games like Final Fantasy XI making an appearance on a mobile platform, Ruff wouldn't provide any specifics, but did say that the scenario "would follow the expected progression, and make a lot of sense for Square Enix."

Ruff confirmed that Square Enix was considering North American releases of its mobile Final Fantasy games "when the technology is ready." The present time frame of these releases is nine months to a year, Ruff added."

Special thanks to SefieGainsborough for finding this information. Again, thank you.

Sasimi, try reading the thread. It has been clearly stated which platform each game is on.

Advent children = Film (will be released as a PSP movie as well)
Before Crisis = Mobile phone
Dirge of Cerberus = PS2

For a mobile phone, I think those graphics are pretty impressive.

PS3's coming out soon? Really? I havn't heard anything about that yet. As far as I was aware, Xbox 2 will be the first next-gen console to appear.

Also, the PSone survived for a long time after the release of the PS2. I think theres still some life in the PS2 yet.

I know that Sony have made a PSX - a PS2.5 which is only a very early prototype and still uses many PS2 parts (it does have a DVD-RW) .This is currently out in Japan and is coming out in Europe after Xmas. However, there has been no information on the PS3 and i think you'll be lucky to see it in the 2 1/2 years. The PS2 is still going strong and i dont think Sony will panic too much over Xbox 2 coming out first.

I recently read that Dirge of Cerberus is supposed to be a shooter... I can't imagine a FF game as a shooter. I think the source that I got this from is pretty reliable.

Also, I don't think the PS3 is going to be out in 2005. They still have a few games that are lined up for the PS2 next year.

I agree. If the PS3 was out next year, I think we would've seen something about it by now.

And yes, I think Dirge of Cerberus is some kind of action adventure game. I've seen a trailer and it seems to be a shooter, not an RPG. Thats kind of dissapointing, but it still looks good. At least its not a rip off of the original game.

Just a small update about Dirge Of Cerberus, posted on http://ff7ac.net/

Dirge of Cerberus takes place 3 years after Final Fantasy VII and Vincent is the main character in the story. The category of the game is still unknown and the project is according to Tetsuya Nomura.

Also an Advent Children update. The release date has been changed quite frequently, and the films shown at the film festivals have only been about 1/3 complete. However, there is a still a possible release date in 2005, though its not known when in the year, or if thats an American or Japanese release.
