Well, I’ve just finished college for the summer and actually have time to write a review. I apologise in advance for any daft errors or spelling mistakes. I just finished today, and am really tired, but if I don’t do it now I probably won’t bother at all...
So, Hyper Street Fighter II, another re-release of Street Fighter 2, seen by many as the best fighting game ever. This package includes fighters from all 5 different versions (World warriors, Champion edition, Turbo, Super and Super Turbo). But is it still as good as it once was?
The answer, unfortunately, is no, not quite. It is a classic game but it seems to be much more annoying than I remember (though maybe that’s just me).
First I’ll discuss the graphics. Obviously they are 16-bit and don’t exactly push the PS2. Then again, I doubt many fans (including myself) would want the graphics to be changed. An option to update the graphics might have been nice, but like I said it wouldn't really have been needed.
(I’m kind of contradicting myself, but I’m too tired to think it through properly)
The gameplay. It’s Street Fighter II. You know how it works. Hadokens, spinning bird kicks, dragon uppercuts. The one left standing wins. The one player mode seems to be much harder than I remember... It took me about 10 extra continues too complete it... (Sigh, I used to be so good). However, while playing one-player seems to have aged the game dramatically, two player is still as brilliant as ever. Playing with a few friends who know what they're doing breathes new life into the game. You can spend hours simply playing two player... It's too addictive... must not go play... finish review first...
This game also allows you to select different characters from the different games. For example, you can play as normal Ryu, or the super turbo version with an added super combo. Unfortunately, you cannot only play one version of the game. No matter which game you select the character from; your opponents in one player mode are all the super turbo versions, meaning that they have a huge advantage over you, in the form of a super combo, if you do not play as the super turbo version of your character. This means that selecting different character versions is only really useful in the 2-player mode.
This game also has a couple of added extras. It has the original opening from the arcade, (world warrior edition) which brings back a few fond memories. It also has the 1994 movie, Street fighter II: The animated movie, which is surprisingly good and worth watching if you have nothing better to do. (I’m a student; I have nothing better to do.) However, I would’ve liked some more extras, like some documentaries on the game or the series, like the ones found on Mortal Kombat, Deadly alliance.
Summing up, if you have fond memories of this game, you will enjoy this. Also if you’re one of the 5 people who have never played Street Fighter II, you should buy it just to see what the fuss is about. The one player is not quite as good as it once was but two player will last a lifetime. Also it’s affordable. In the UK it only has a £20 price tag, £15 if you shop around a bit.
I give this game 85%.
Ok now I want your opinions. Have you played this game? If so, what did you think of it?
Also, to the admins of this site, is this review the kind of thing you’re looking for? How can I improve future reviews? (This is the first review I’ve ever written, be nice :D )
Thanks
