Resizing avatars

I have a different avatar that doesn't fit on this forum because of the different size pixel restrictions. I was wondering, what's the best way to resize it without getting it too distorted?

What are the pixel dimensions of the original file? What software do you use for image editing?

Well, I think the image is about 120x120 and i haven't really done image editing before, just changing file types from .bmp to .jpg instead. I'm not sure I've got any image editors unless there's a simple one on my computer.

It's gonna be more complicated then I thought isn't it? :o
