Since there isn't a topic for these upcoming systems yet, I'll just post this question in the 'Off Topic' section.
Which of these portable systems do you prefer and will most likely get? I will probably get the Nintendo DS, since it will be released earlier than the PSP. The two screens appeal to me, since there are so many things that can be done with them. The PSP looks real slick and pretty, but it's not going to be shipped til 1st QTR 2005. They all have some great games (Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, etc for DS. Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, etc for PSP) so that might be a big point in my decision. What about you?

Im probably going to get the PSP, mainly because i've heard it will be able to play music and movies as well as games. Also, the games are supposed to have PS2 quality graphics. The GBA was a dissapointment to me and i havnt used it in ages. I can wait a little longer for the PSP
I'm going for the DS. Just the fact that it has wireless built in is great. The fact that it allows you to play games over the internet is just phenomenal! I'm a bit confused by the PSP's claims to play movies though. It's too small for regular sized cds or dvds so it must use smaller disks. Sounds kinda like the gba movie gimmick to me. =/

I got my new EGM (If you are following these upcoming portable systems, I suggest you get the August2004 edition) today and it has a lot of info about the systems! It has the actual sizes in it too! I'm not going to give out too much information because I think that's illegal or something, but I'll post some of the high and low points for these systems.
Nintendo DS: + strengths
- Dual Screens (duhh)
- has a microphone
- the lower screen is a touch pad
- will be out by the end of '04
- can play GBA and DS games
- up to 16 players can network within 30 feet, of connect thru the internet
- game cartridges are approx. 1/2 the size of GBA games
- cartridge games means longer battery life!
- price
+ weaknesses
- buttons are kinda hard to press and no analog stick for 3D games
- can ONLY play GBA and DS games [meaning it can't play GBC or GB games]
- not that pretty
- the stylus might scratch the screen
- cartridge games means worse sound and less storage space
Sony PSP: + strengths
- runs on UMD discs (which are about 2.5 inches in diameter and can store about 14 times more space than the DS cartridges. [UMD's have 1.8GB of space])
- has many features that the DS has
- the screen is 4.3 inches big. (16:9 ratio [widescreen] ratio)
- it can connect to many things, including digital cameras, computers, or even your PS2
- controls are fairly similar to the PS2
- wide third-party support
- very nice and sleek design
+ weaknesses
- Disc media means shorter battery life, although Sony says that it can last around 10 hours playing games (less for music and movies)
- high price (estimated to be around $300 at launch)
- Sony doesn't have the best record for their hardware, and optical drives break fairly easily
- Later release date than DS [PSP will hit shelves in spring 2005]
- Is actually longer than the DS! (can you believe it?!?)
If you want more info about these systems, I recommend going out to get the new EGM!!

like wise.. nintendo is basically for kids under the age of 12.. maybe with the exception of mario and a few others. They make very childish games.

Seems like everyone likes to use that kind of argument. They do make some childish games, but they have some great masterpieces as well. It's probably due to the lack of third party support. :(
I don't really need the extra features that the PSP has (music, movies, etc.). I mean, that's what my laptop is for. And for my laptop, I don't have to buy the UMD versions of the movies that can only be watched on the PSP.

There is another problem with the DS. Some games require you to use the D-pad and the stylus at the same time. This is no problem for people who are right-handed. However, this will present some difficulties for lefties like myself. This could make some games impossible to play. I think i'll stick with the PSP.
