No, the famous heavyweight hasn’t been
purified into high quality coffee beans, but he is hitting the small screen in

Mike Tyson Boxing for your mobile phone. Player One Limited have secured the rights from Codemasters to create
a java boxing game endorsed by the ‘Iron Man’ himself. According to the press release the game
”will offer boxing fans the chance to put on the devastating boxing gloves of the
boxing legend himself”. Either the mobile game developers have found some way to transfer sweat over the GSM networks
so players can be fully immersed in the atmosphere of the boxing ring or they’re going overboard on the marketing
speak. I’m going with the latter.


This kind of game is a good example of what’s wrong with the mobile gaming market. I don’t want to play a cut-down
version of Punch-Out which features characters 6
pixels tall as well as sound effects that annoy the hell out of old ladies at bus stations. I also don’t want celebrity
endorsement, especially when it’s a mobile game. What I do want is addictive, fast paced and easy to learn games which
are cheap and easy to download (ie via a PC/Mac) or even included on phones. Just take a look at the 90s craze for
Snake on Nokia phones. Back then that was a big
reason for buying a mobile phone. Now all I see is the same commercially licensed games that I avoid on the consoles.
