The Japanese market is usually the first to get any new colors of Sony and Nintendo hardware (if U.S. consumers who don’t import ever see them at all), so it comes as no surprise that America’s been given the short end of the stick once again. This time, it concerns different Game Boy Micro launch colors. At least this time around, Westerners will get to decide between black and silver hardware, but it just pales in comparison to the fruity pink, green, and blue flavors you’ll find in addition to the default silver when the Micro releases in Europe this November. And of course, Japan ups the States’ black and silver with purple, blue, and a special Famicom-edition design. To make up for that, American consumers will get to sample three different faceplates for each model: “Flame,” “Camouflage,” and silver fronts for the black Micro, and “Ammonite,” “Ladybug,” and black plates for the silver one.
Wow, faceplates of Biblical proportions. The combinations really are endless. It’s nice to see someone pick up on the customization theme before the 360 comes out, but I hope they come out with some better faceplate designs soon. Tribal tattoos for the portable aside, where’s my NES controller faceplate? With a form factor so close to the 8-bit original, I guess it’s only a matter of time until we see our favorite boxy controller make a comeback. Classic NES Series, don’t fail me now!
